Every bride has some idea of how she wants to look on her wedding day, but how does a TV show create a believeable bridal look for a fictional character? The answer: It takes a whole lot of pros who know the character inside and out. I spoke to the dream team behind Amanda Dillion's wedding-day look and discovered a few behind-the-scenes tips and secrets.

"When you’re creating a wedding for a character, you really have to keep that character in mind," says David Zyla, All My Children 's Wardrobe Designer. "Amanda is a very feminine character. Her style is ultra feminine. She wears flounce well, she wears colors like sage and blush and pale grays, very romantic colors. So we wanted to take that and transfer it into Amanda’s wedding look. If we all of a sudden put her into a sleek Art Deco gown, it would just be too hard and it wouldn’t be the character. We really wanted to keep that in mind. It’s a very sophisticated look, but it’s also very feminine."

Finding the One: "We pulled several dresses from various resources and that was my first choice. I said, 'Let’s try this one,' and she just grinned from ear to ear and said, 'I love it, I love it, I love it.' Just because it seemed too easy we did try two others on, but the rest of the rack was never touched."

David's Inspiration: "I thought of this dress, since it is her dream wedding, as that dress a young girl thinks of when she says, 'When I get married I want a dress like…' I think Amanda is that woman who pulled out pages of wedding gowns when she was younger and kept them in a file somewhere or in a drawer. I thought OK, well that means it’s very romantic, very lush, nostalgic. So that’s where it started. It always comes from the character. It has to make sense."

The Hair

“My first plan of attack was to look at her wardrobe," says Joe Matke, All My Children 's Key Hairstylist. "I’ve done probably hundreds of weddings in my career and I always look at the wedding dress—that determines the hairstyle. In this case, Amanda’s wedding dress has a criss-cross back so I wanted that to show. I talked to the designer, David, and we agreed that her hair up would complement her dress better."

How Joe Created the Hairstyle: "Chrishell has a whole bunch of hair. She has beautiful, long, thick hair. I either use Moroccan oil or Keratase Oleo-Relax to make her hair smooth because her hair gets big like a lion. So I put a little of that in her wet hair. I air-dried it and then I blow-dried her bangs completely back. Then I took a one-inch curling iron and curled the entire thing. I sprayed Sebastian hairspray on each section, curled it and pin curled it. I let down all her pin curls and I started building the hairdo curl by curl. I sprayed it and used a little cream to smooth down the frizzies.”

A Few Words of Advice from Joe: “Have a hairstyle that suits your face and don’t always go with what you think is the most comfortable. Go with what the professional tells you looks the best. A bride might hate her forehead, a lot of girls hate their forehead, so they have bangs when in reality, you may have a beautiful face and you’re hiding it with some dowdy bangs. Do something that makes you look the most beautiful. I always tell my brides to look not only in bridal magazines but at the red carpets and the movie stars because they have the most modern, beautiful looks. It’s also really important to do something that flatters the dress because the dress style really dictates the whole look of the bride. So listen to your dress and your face and of course your hairstylist.”

The Makeup

“I wanted to keep her skin looking clean and give her coverage—soft and dewy so she didn’t look like she had too much makeup," says Kerry Herta, All My Children 's Head Makeup Artist. "I didn’t want her to look like she had that matte finish."

How Kerry Created the Look: "I used a Japanese makeup line that we use on the show called Koh Gen Doh. They have a beautiful moisture foundation that has adjustable coverage. You can wear it sheer or build it up, so I kind of just built it up to the point where I felt like she had really nice coverage and did not powder it. I just let it absorb into the skin and then used a cream blush on her cheeks. I used a combination of shimmers and matte powdered shadows on her eyes to give her a sultry, smoky look but then added some shimmery bride-like colors. Because I went smokier on the eyes to give her a little bit of a fashion editorial look, I went light and soft on the lips.”

Kerry's Important Piece of Advice: “Don’t look overdone. You don’t want people to look at a bride and see too much makeup sitting on the skin. So my advice always is to treat the skin but then get the right makeup for your skin type and really match the color properly. For photos you do want to go a touch heavier but not too heavy where it’s noticeable.”

Healthy Skin Do's & Don'ts: Two things Kerry recommends to make sure your skin looks its best on your wedding day—drink lots of water and avoid too many facials and experimenting with new products. If you do find yourself with a red pimple on the morning of your wedding, Kerry’s quick fix tip is to use Visine because it does get the red out.
